Jeremy Camp: Living Out Loud

Jeremy Camp clearly has the knack for writing a hit song, but with his upcoming album, he’s never been more sure about his mission.

It’s a few days after Gospel Music Week, and Jeremy Camp is clearly worn out. It’s not that he’s in a bad mood, mind you. No matter how tired he is, Camp always manages to stay upbeat. Maybe it’s his naturally sanguine personality or the fact he chats with complete strangers for a living, but whatever it is, Camp still has insightful things to say between yawns.

Other than being a husband to Adie and a father to two energetic little girls, 4-year-old Isabella and 2-year-old Arianne, Camp has been pulling late nights in the studio these days as he prepares for the release of his 6th album, Speaking Louder Than Before (BEC).

On the heels of two more No. 1 hits, “No Matter What it Takes” and “Let it Fade,” from 2007’s Beyond Measure, Camp says he “couldn’t be more excited about his new project.” Of course, it might be easy to dismiss Camp’s comments as standard-issue, pre-album hype. But Camp says this excitement is on a whole different level. “The writing process for Speaking Louder Than Before has been truly extraordinary,” Camp says. “I feel like it’s the project where I’ve really come into my own and know more than ever before what I’m truly passionate about. And that’s a message for this generation. I feel like God has really opened my heart to the sense of urgency about truly being the light of the world.”

In the past few months, Camp has been thinking about being trapped in the Christian bubble and what it means to be God’s representation of Him to a hurting world. “God’s called us to be the light of the world, and we really need, more than ever before, to shine brightly,” Camp shares. “So many of the songs that were pouring out were a rally cry to be an example. Maybe that means inviting someone to church or engaging people in more meaningful conversations. But whatever it is, we all need to be doing more of it.”

And while the message Camp hopes to convey definitely reflects his choice of album title, does Speaking Louder Than Before apply to the musical side of the equation as well? “To an extent, the songs do rock more,” Camp shares. “It’s not a huge change from the style I’ve pursued in the past, but there is more of a driving, anthemic feel overall.”

In addition to a slight change of pace musically, Camp has also upped the ante with his website (jeremycamp.com). Not only is he blogging more from the studio with an insider’s look at the making of Speaking Louder Than Before, but he’s also getting more interactive (along with Adie and his band members in separate blogs) on a regular basis to share with fans “what God is doing in His life through music and otherwise.”

“It’s become increasingly more important to communicate with fans in an up-to-the-minute format,” Camp says. “So we’ve enhanced the website and will be rolling out even more new content in the weeks to come.”

Catch Camp on the festival circuit this summer as he’ll be headlining several of the biggest events. And look for the Brown Bannister-produced Speaking Louder Than Before to hit stores and iTunes in November.
