40 Weeks of Your Life: Isaiah
09-30-2006
by Vicky Beeching

I have fun memories of studying Isaiah at Oxford, as I had a total mental block about how to spell it! It took me weeks to get the hang of it and remember that the "i" is in between two "a"s. I tried Isiah, Isaih and constantly got it wrong!!

If I had to be stranded on a desert island with any one book of the Bible, one of the strongest contenders would be Isaiah. Chapters 40 - 66 in particular, are one of my most favorite parts of Scripture.

There are various theories about who wrote Isaiah, and ideas that there may have been several different authors. The key thing is the content of the book, so I won't linger on the theories of authorship…

One key aspect of content for me is seeing how Isaiah walked with God. He was a prophet, and someone who the Lord trusted and spoke to. Chapter 1 says that the Lord called Isaiah before he was born, and that He had a plan and a calling on his life before he was even born. It's a reminder to us that God has a plan and a purpose for every one of us and that he created us and loved us deeply.

In the same way, much of what we read is written about Israel and the Jewish nation, but we can also apply it to us as God's children and Bride.

It's a long book, but don't lose heart! Its well worth the read!
