The Noise of Summer: Freaky at the Bat
06-28-2006
by Brenten Gilbert
Thus, it should be no surprise that over a decade later, artists from Gotee Records and Mono Vs Stereo have teamed up to put together FREAKED!, a tribute album celebrating the impact of Jesus Freak.
First Inning: So Help Me God
Artist: The Showdown | Length: 5:00
First Impression: this is almost if not identical to the original intro with the super thunk of a strong wall of guitars waiting once the intro "unwinds"... it's outta here! Music: solid solid solid... it's back to the warning track, at the wall, it's gone! Vocals: think Metallica. really. it's a pretty good vocal except for a few spots... off the wall, still in the park Overall Tone: very cool song overall... definitely feeling the rhythm and the vibe... back back back... gone Lasting Impression: a few rough spots but at the end of the day, I'm still singing this song in the back of my head... goodbye!
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 4:39
First Impression: here's the wind up... literally... pretty solid way to start off the album... it's definitely a long ball. Music: nice bit of rock with a little bit of funk and soul thrown in... well executed... it's a screamer down the line and over the fence. Vocals: nice harmony. the three voices play well off of each other and give listeners plenty to dig into... so long. Overall Tone: great introduction to the album, kicks things off with a steady flow and registers well... gone. Lasting Impression: great song that sticks with you... five for five...

Second Inning: Colored People
Artist: Gotee Brothers/Ayiesha Woods/John Reuben | Length: 4:17
First Impression: nice vibe good first swing, but blame it on the wind, it doesn't have the sails to take it over the wall Music: there's a nice rhythm to it, and a strong "head bob" vibe... I think it's yes, it's in the seats Vocals: Ayiesha does a pretty solid job, but it's not all that compelling to be honest, John Reuben's verse is pretty on point, but this one's off the wall and still in play... Overall Tone: the tone of the song matches up pretty nicely with the message... heads up out there in the bleachers, this one's coming your way Lasting Impression: this one's honestly a bit too easy to forget... long line drive that hits the right field turf and rolls onto the warning track.
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 4:26
First Impression: good full sound, the guitars set a nice tone before the song really opens up... say goodbye, 'cause this ball's out of here. Music: nice overall flow to the song, the rhythm keeps you listening, but it does feel a bit repetitive after a while... close but not quite... it's deep, but it's off in foul territory Vocals: again, a nice balance of harmony and styles... this one's fair and it's not coming back. Overall Tone: it's full of "diverse tones that more than color our bones"... okay, let's call it a homer and move on... Lasting Impression: it works well, but again, at the end of the game, it's not the song I'm most likely to remember... a hard grounder up the third base line...

Third Inning: Jesus Freak
Artist: 4th Avenue Jones | Length: 4:39
First Impression: BAM! the guitars, the riff and that little funky slide kicks this off right... remember, the ball park is not responsible for damage to cars parked in the lot Music: yessir... we've got it all clicking.. so long! Vocals: okay, here's the thing. Tena's on point. Ahmad. we love you but your verse has that "I'm too cool to run, so I'm going to stick my hands in my pockets and try to walk fast" feel to it. "rhythm. belly. head"... would've been a double in a real game, but it's worth nothing in the derby. Overall Tone: really feeling the track because it has all the energy of a live performance of the song... I think the skin got knocked clear off of the ball. Lasting Impression: the song's been over for a long time now and I'm still dancing. Gone!
DH: Artist: Chasing Victory | Length: 6:21
First Impression: I like the intro... it's somewhat of a subdued approach to the song with is pretty interesting... he connects, it's got the distance... it's gone! Music: it's not that it's bad, but it's very muddled and the thickness of the production kind of swallows the energy of the song... a hard shot right back at the pitcher, but not too much beyond that. Vocals: sometimes with the sound of an Ozzie, sometime with the growl of a dying monster... most of the time, I'm not that interested... fouled off the left field post... Overall Tone: scary? well, more confusing... it's an aggressive version in some cases, but it's also falls flat in some spots... this one bounces over the fence, a ground rule double... Lasting Impression: it's interesting if nothing else... for that reason alone, this lengthy version is able to launch it over the wall... get-r-gone!
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 4:50
First Impression: interesting little opening to the track, but to be honest, it lacks a little bit of punch... this one is off the top of the fence and just barely into the stands... Music: once it kicks off, the track really works well... good energy... it's going, going... it's gone! Vocals: so far on the album, this is the best showing of the diversity and richness of the vocals... it's lost in the cheap seats... Overall Tone: keeps you listening and engaged in the song... it's a homer of Babe Ruthian proportions Lasting Impression: yep... it's the money song... you'll be singing this for ten more years... it's off the scoreboard

Fourth Inning: What If I Stumble
Artist: Sarah Kelly | Length: 3:45
First Impression: shrouded almost in an air of mystery, the song immediately grabs your ear... it... could... go... all... the... way... Music: rather interesting musical choice for this song... it works well for the most part... enough to overshadow where it doesn't... it's a short homer, but a homer none the less... Vocals: Sarah Kelly has a voice you either can't get enough of or can't stand at all... but it's on point and it keeps the track interesting... a high fly ball deep into center field, this one's gone. Overall Tone: as interesting as the track may be, the song seems to lose a bit of its edge and impact... this one doinks off the end of the bat and doesn't get too far... Lasting Impression: again, with the loss of impact, the track just doesn't stay with you too much after it's done... foul ball straight back over the plate...
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 5:06
First Impression: that is an amazing quote... and it sets off the song very well... an upper deck blast! Music: getting a little intimate and unplugged, this translates well to an endearing track that reaches out well... at least it reaches out over the fence. Vocals: with stripped down music, the vocals become even more important and vulnerable... dc Talk delivers with another strong shot over the wall. Overall Tone: fitting for the message, the theme and sound of this song keep you listening again and again... it's another one out of here. Lasting Impression: there are some people with gloves on the field, but they don't need to be... it's over all their heads... and the song sticks with them.

Fifth Inning: Day By Day
Artist: House of Heroes | Length: 4:49
First Impression: a good improvement on the original intro.. there's a nice draw to it that brings you into the song... aloha means hello and goodbye! Music: very interesting soundtrack for this tune, adding a lot of nice little tweaks to the song to keep listeners caring about the song... even to the very end... this one's packed its bags and is headed to the beach... Vocals: one of the most compelling vocalists recording right now... enough said... it's gone. Overall Tone: gripping track that plugs listeners in early and keeps them on the trip from beginning to end... it's lost in the lights... Lasting Impression: with a bit of work, this forgettable song sticks out again... it's clean sweep...
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 4:30
First Impression: kind of a drab intro to be honest. kind of just plodding along... got jammed on that pitch and it never left the infield Music: even though the chorus picks things up a little bit, it really doesn't take off until it's almost over and even then it's not much to write home about... a nice blooper that lands in the outfield... Vocals: adequate, but not all that passionate or compelling... it's enough to reach the crowd, but only the first row. Overall Tone: there's something of a cool rhythm to it, but the song never really stretches it's wings and takes flight... a ground ball... Lasting Impression: this is one song on the album that is easy to forget. clear the dugout... incoming!

Sixth Inning: Between You and Me
Artist: Relient K | Length: 3:37
First Impression: very cool intro, hinting at a lot of energy to be had... it's a long fly ball into the right field seats. Music: very nice combination of poppy energy and subtle thoughtfulness... it's gone. Vocals: solid vocals that stay true to the song without compromising the Relient K feel... it's outta here! Overall Tone: it works well, despite not being as serious in tone as the original... so long! Lasting Impression: very nice song that drives home a good point... say goodbye and don't forget to write!
DH: Artist: Paul Wright & Ayiesha Woods | Length: 5:05
First Impression: well, it's not horrible, but it seems a little bit on the side of musak.. a dribbler up the first base line. Music: well, the song does a little to stray from that introduction, but still seems to stick with a rather uninteresting format... foul ball bouncing up the left side. Vocals: the vocals are actually done quite well... Ayiesha Woods and Paul Wright play off of each other well... there's the power, it's sent out of the park. Overall Tone: it's really hard to break out of the cheese factor set by the music... swing and a miss. Lasting Impression: good bonus version, but it really doesn't stick with you... grounder between first and second.
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 4:59
First Impression: nice intro, I like the use of crescendo and the nice tone that it sets for the song... let's call a homer a homer, shall we? Music: very toned down, but well constructed song... nice rhythm to it... it's a long ball for sure. Vocals: on point and the trade offs really enrich the song... it's up and it's over. Overall Tone: very mellow song, sets a great tone for the topic of reconciliation well done... home run. Lasting Impression: it's a very full song that's well put together and leaves you in a contemplative mood... rounds out the inning.

Seventh Inning: Like It, Love It, Need It
Artist: Fighting Instinct | Length: 4:44
First Impression: this is kind of an interesting intro in that there's not much of an intro... we're right in the thick of the song... I'm okay with that... it's a round-tripper. Music: very nice sound to the song... nice jolts of energy when needed and it works well... out she goes. Vocals: to be honest, the vocals are simply adequate until the bridge... that takes it over the top and over the fence. Overall Tone: very nice job overall of creating an atmosphere that's at times crazy and at times quite calm... much like life... it's a goner. Lasting Impression: definitely leaving an impact both musically and vocally... the song grabs your attention and keeps it... it's in the stands...
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 5:23
First Impression: this song kind of dives right in... tries to gets you hooked right in the thick of the first verse... it's deep, but off the left field wall and still in play Music: the song does open up pretty nicely and offers an interesting listen... this one has left the building. Vocals: another strong job vocally with a lot of texture to offer... back... back... and over. Overall Tone: nice driving rhythm that's kind of frantic at spots, but rather indicative of the topic... a natural swing that takes that one for a ride. Lasting Impression: it does stay with you... it's a very catchy song... boom.

Eighth Inning: In the Light
Artist: Storyside: B | Length: 4:44
First Impression: with a simple count and a drum hit, the song begins... and I'm into it... and this one's out of here. Music: pretty good bit of music here, keeps the listener happy and tuned in... this one grazes the fence post as it skips over. Vocals: the vocals are a little shaky in spots... could be a better overall performance... pop fly landing near second base. Overall Tone: there's a good energy to this song and it maintains the message pretty well... long line drive skimming over the fence. Lasting Impression: overall, the track packs a pretty good punch... like connecting solidly with good bat speed and driving it out of the park.
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 5:05
First Impression: rather subtle and subdued, but still quite effective... it's going over the fences. Music: it's a rather gripping piece of music... really draws the listener in and then keeps our attention with the poppy chorus... it's out of the yard. Vocals: nice performance yet again by the trio... the production actually adds an extra texture to the vocal that's quite enjoyable... this one's history. Overall Tone: fairly dramatic, quite touching... very true to the theme... it's over our heads and over the wall. Lasting Impression: admit it. you've caught yourself singing that acapella section of the chorus more times than you can count... up, up, and away she goes!

Ninth Inning: What Have We Become?
Artist: Liquid | Length: 5:32
First Impression: Down to the last inning and FREAKED! comes out swinging... rather compelling texture to this intro... kiss it goodbye! Music: Liquid has proven to be a very talented producer and performer... this is a very intricately layered piece that works well... sayonara! Vocals: remarkable vocals with a lot of a full range of singers... you'll see that one on SportsCenter. Overall Tone: the production and orchestration does a phenomenal job of creating the perfect atmosphere for the questions asked in the song... here it comes and there it goes. Lasting Impression: this song will stick with you simply because it's weighty and thought provoking... Zoom!
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 6:08
First Impression: this song gets off to somewhat of a slow start... I'm still listening, but it's not because of the first impression... so close and yet so far... foul ball! Music: very cool song once it gets going... nice, driving rhythm with lots going on... it's a humdinger! Vocals: solid showing throughout the song with lots of nice "showcase" spots here and there... they sent this one into orbit. Overall Tone: very nice use of the music and the production to accentuate the theme of the track... sure put some oomph on that one. Lasting Impression: this is a very reflective track and definitely sticks around... especially with the cadence outro... goodbye and goodnight.

Tenth Inning: Mind's Eye
Artist: Family Force 5 | Length: 2:59
First Impression: FREAKED! is pulling out the big guns now... Family Force 5 has generated one of the biggest buzzes this year... the name alone draws in curious listeners... Slam-a-lam-a-ding-dong! Music: the song certainly takes some unique twists and turns... it's intriguing for sure... whiz bang boom... it's long gone. Vocals: well, if there's anything to complain about, I suppose it's the vocals... a bit on the grating side at times... it's going... going... going off the wall, just short of glory. Overall Tone: one might expect that all the energy and activities going on would distract listeners from the message of the song... doesn't seem to though... waaaaaaaaay back, it's GONE! Lasting Impression: fun song and all, but it's pretty hard to re-create it in your head, to be honest... it comes and goes... a high fly ball deep to center field... and into the turf...
Artist: dcTalk | Length: 5:17
First Impression: a grinding dissidence that builds anticipation as Toby recites poetry... yeah, I can dig it... it's a big blast that's lifted out of here. Music: very enjoyable song... nothing too spectacular musically, but it's clean and catchy and very likeable... Bu. Bye. Vocals: closing out strong, the three-throated group brings another great display of their ability... bye bye birdie. Overall Tone: the air of mystery seems to surround this song... pretty cool feeling as you listen to it... and away she goes! Lasting Impression: this may not be the song that you find yourself singing after all is said and done, but you will remember it... if you want to talk to that one, it's gonna be a long distance call.
