40 Weeks of Your Life: Leviticus

We get the name Leviticus from the Latin, meaning "the book of the Levites". The descendants of Levi were a Tribe set apart to God, and were His priests in the temple. This book is a description of the laws and requirements they needed to carry out.
The major theme is holiness. For them it meant adhering to the instructions of the divine law. As Christians today, God still calls us to live holy lives by trusting in the 'New Covenant' that He made through the death and His Son. Let the message of holiness in Leviticus stir your heart to live pure and right before our God of love.
It is generally separated into two sections, which give us a useful overview:
Chapters 1 -16 and 27: The Priestly Code; details on how the system of worship and sacrifices should be carried out
Chapters 17 - 26: The Holiness Code; laws and commands related to living holy lives of purity.
In a Bible-read through, the toughest books to conquer are usually Leviticus and Numbers. So give yourself a pat on the back for making it through Leviticus, and take a deep breath before diving into Numbers!!
One thing that strikes my heart from reading this book is God's attention to detail. I'm amazed at the detailed way in which God designed and laid out the Old Testament system of worship and sacrifice. That says to my heart that such a God of details knows and acres about every detail in my life and heart. Nothing goes unnoticed. Nothing is unimportant to His watchful eye. If circumstances are confusing and don't' make sense, often our response is to think God hasn't noticed or doesn't care. Leviticus, in a round a bout way, reminds me that He is the God of details, and that every nuance of my every day life is carefully watched over and cared about by our Heavenly Father.
Like I said in our Exodus re-cap, reading any section of the Old Testament Law also gives me a tremendous amount of joy, as I realise all that Jesus accomplished on the Cross. I am so grateful that we no longer live under the requirements of the Torah, and that we can walk into His presence by the blood of Christ!
