MUCH MORE THAN A MERE REALITY SHOW RUNNER-UP
His name may be best associated as a finalist on the sixth season of “American Idol,” but one time Half Past Forever frontman Chris Sligh has since appeared with Jay Leno and Little Richard on “The Tonight Show” and collaborated with Kevin Max on a rendering of Johnny Cash’s “Run On For A Long Time.” Between those illustrious appearances and a legion of fans who followed the show, the singer/songwriter also inked a solo deal with Brash Music (also home to Dove Award winner Aaron Shust), which spawned the new Running Back To You.
Just like his unique appearances on “Idol” and all the other projects, this collection of 13 cuts once again showcases a bellowing rock vocalist with an underlying range of impressive tones and aggressive instrumentation.
The disc opens with the triple threat of “Arise,” “Cry Tonight” and “I’m Clean,” three tunes steeped in reckless riffs and pounding piano chords sure to strike the fancy of NEEDTOBREATHE, The Afters or Daughtry fans. Other intense tunes include the guitar charged “Waiting For You” and the wallops of “Something Beautiful,” but the most striking selection is by far the orchestrally decorated “Loaded Gun.” All the while, the relative newcomer frames his lyrics from the perspective of a believer reaching out to a hurting world, while still giving plenty of sustenance for those who are already spiritually grounded.
