If you enjoy your worship on the mellow side, if you want to transcend the cluttered landscape and throw out your electronic scheduling device, if you’re longing for a worship experience that feels true…..this is the worship album for you. Vinelife Unplugged was recorded live at Vinelife Church in Boulder, CO last summer and this rootsy, artful project completely captures the beauty and freedom of its setting. Featuring a compilation of unique, talented artists including Aaron Strumpel and Kate Hurley (Enter the Worship Circle), and Jason Roberson and Luke Humbrecht (Ellary), the project intersects beauty, worship, and art. I can’t stop listening to it.
First off, it must be said, Vinelife Unplugged is a guitar-lover’s dream. The gently strumming opener “Twenty Three” moves Aaron’ Strumpel’s husky vocal from a thicket of warm harmonies into freely flowing worship over edgy acoustic rhythms, while tender guitar noodling enhances Humbrecht’s “Sweetly Singing.” Beginning with a prayer for focus, the hushed reverence of “Pursuit” continues over the gentle accompaniment of a cello and some sort of vibe instrument.
Kate Hurley beautifully illustrates the power of simplicity on her soulful “To You,” wailing on the way out. More rootsy joy is found in the holy bounce of “Worship and Wonder,” and the achingly sweet violin of “Centuries” only adds to the track’s already significant potency. It’s the inimitable Kate Hurley again over the organic percussion of “Hush Child,” and the disc winds down quietly with a hushed acoustic take on “How Great Thou Art.” The album’s eleven tracks flow like warm honey; if unplugged is your preference, it just doesn’t get any better than this.
