The success of Starfield’s last album, Beauty in the Broken, kept them busy on the road and, ironically, disconnected from the local church for longer than they liked. After moving back to their native Vancouver, Canada, the band has found a healthy peace once again, and I Will Go is a celebration of that restoration and peace. A collection of twelve modern worship anthems, the album will please lovers of guitar-driven pop rock with a vertical bent.
Starfield writes lush pop songs with hooks. It’s just what they do, and the album’s energetic opener, “From the Corners of the Earth,” continues the trend, declaring the supremacy of God through pulsating rhythms and a fat hook. “Hosanna” has an epic Delirious-like vibe; its lyrics are a bit stale but oh, that bridge! Blissfully melodic, it’s a standout track. More melodic magic on the guitar-driven “Reign In Us,” a moving and anthemic plea for the power of God, while edgy guitar riffs open the title track, a soaring pop song of surrender.
Lead singer Tim Neufeld’s soft vocal is in top form on the atmospheric “Holy Is Our God,” a track creative enough to be interesting, singable enough to be congregationally accessible. The same is true of the melodic, upbeat “The Loveliest Sound” and the luxuriant “Remain.” Passionate worship wails through the thick soundscape of “Great In All,” building finally to a crescendo of exuberant praise. The most thoughtfully constructed track would have to be “All We Need,” potently infused with swirling guitars and a throbbing bass line. The tender worship of the pulsating closer “Hiding Place” celebrates the protection and sanctuary of the Lord. My impression of Starfield is that they can go a lot deeper than what is revealed on I Will Go, but this is written with the church in mind and as such, it may make Sunday morning even sweeter.
