I don’t care what style of music you prefer; it’s impossible not to be affected by the simple faith and power of Laura Story’s Great God Who Saves. The warm sincerity rises up through her delicate organic songs like the smell of a steamy breakfast on a cold winter morning, snapping you to attention effortlessly. This one is for God-lovers of every stripe and color.
The rootsy praise of opener “Bless The Lord” easily draws you in. There’s nothing new about its movements, but its bouncy guitar chords and Story’s earthy warm vocals are quickly appealing. “Immortal, Invisible” contrasts delicate almost whimsical arrangements with robust Biblical lyrics and the juxtaposition totally works. Her vocal, clear as the proverbial bell, shines through the melodic and moving “Mighty To Save.”
I didn’t realize Story was the composer of “Indescribable,” and I found her acoustic take to be presented with more gentle sensitivity than the popular Chris Tomlin version. The title track is energized a bit by her slight country vocal twang, as well as by pulsating rhythms and glimmering steel guitars nuances. Lyrically it’s very straightforward praise, delivered with great sincerity. But things heat up rapidly with the simple but profound piano ballad, “There Is Nothing,” dripping with humility. This quietly reflective track is an album standout, along with companion piece “Grace.” Sweetly presented, and irresistibly poignant, the ballad showcases both Story’s warm vocals and God’s tender mercies.
The lilting charmer “Make Something Beautiful” comes across like a jar of warm honey, and closing piano ballad “Perfect Peace,” gorgeously embellished with strings, is a heartwarming glimpse into God’s perspective. Ultimately, that is the great strength of Great God Who Saves: it is a faith-builder, drawing your heart nearer to the Lord.
