The greatest accomplishments in history began with a simple step of faith. Of course, no step of faith is really all that simple, but without the faith to take those first steps where would we be today? For the Israelites in the desert, one significant first step was taken by sending the priests into the Jordan river during harvest, when the river was at flood stage. Carrying the Ark of the Covenant, the priests stepped into the river and immediately the water stopped flowing and they were able to cross what seemed like an insurmountable obstacle.

With his debut release for Essential Records, Brandon Heath encourages listeners to step out of their comfort zones, exercise their faith in God and take the first steps that await them. Don't Get Comfortable reminds us that the world in which we live is not our final destination and that we need to use the life that we are given to glorify God and fulfill His purposes. Songs like "Simple Man" explore the way God can use us despite our shortcomings as long as we are willing. The title track reminds us of the many times God has proven His power over time and challenges us to let Him show us again.

As a singer songwriter, Brandon Heath proves to have the ability to relate to listeners with a positive message, but perhaps even moreso with catchy hooks and creative rhythms. The album is largely acoustic, but there are tracks like the single "Our God Reigns" that have a much grander sound to them. The engaging rhythm of songs like the title track and "I'm Not Who I Was" are certain to grab the listener's attention, while the vulnerability of tracks like "Red Sky" and "The Light" keep them tuned in to the end. On the other end of the musical spectrum are pop tracks like "I Will Lay You Down," a song that uses a lively presentation to share the comfort and support that God offers to His followers.

Overall, Brandon Heath's debut makes quite a splash for listeners and should immediately connect with fans of Shawn McDonald, John Mayer and other singer songwriters. Though in the same vein as some of these contemporaries, Heath is certainly unique enough to stand out on his own. Don't Get Comfortable is a very appealing album, a great listen and proof that songs can be worshipful and low key without being washed out and run of the mill.
