Bourne Questions
08-01-2007
by Johann Snyder

The popular movie character Jason Bourne is coming home. He’s coming home to find answers. He’s looking for answers to questions that we’ve all had at some point in our life. The Bourne Ultimatum is more than just yet another final chapter to a trilogy in a summer filled with final chapters to trilogies; it’s a reflection of the search within us all for the very answers Jason Bourne hopes to find.

Who Am I

When the character of Jason Bourne was first introduced in The Bourne Identity, audiences were caught up in the mystery of who was Jason Bourne. He was a man with no memory but in possession of extraordinary skills. Why he had those skills and what he was to use them for, he could not remember; but he desperately wanted to find out. Perhaps in The Bourne Ultimatum we will finally discover along with Jason Bourne who he really is. But then, that’s a search we’ve all embarked on at some point in our lives, and perhaps you may still be on that journey. Who are we really? What is our true identity? Is it what the people around us see? What our friends and family see? Someone once suggested that who you really are is how you behave when there’s no one else around to see and judge your actions; in those moments of complete isolation, our true nature is revealed. I believe that if we truly want to know who we are, we cannot find that answer within ourselves. In fact, we can never truly know who we are until we find ourselves in Jesus Christ. He is the only one who truly knows us because he’s the one who made us. Not only that, but He loved us enough to die on a cross in our place and overcame death so that we might ourselves would never have to taste death. Like Jason Bourne, if we want to know who we really are; we first must come home. We first must come to Jesus Christ.

Why Am I Here

Equally important to Jason Bourne is not only his true identity, but his purpose in life. Jason Bourne is perhaps one of the most skilled assassins and espionage agents in the entire world, but for what purpose did he train in his former life to attain all these skills? Why is Jason Bourne who he is? That is yet another mystery that may or may not be revealed in the final chapter of the Bourne odyssey. Like Jason Bourne, we have all been given a certain set of skills and talents. Some of which we know, some of which are yet to be discovered. But the question is why are we skilled in these areas? Why do we have the talents that we have? What is our purpose? Why are we here? For some of us, the quest for purpose may be more pressing than the quest for identity. We think we know who we are, but we don’t know why we are here. I assure, that you do have a purpose. We are not here by random, nor were we randomly granted the skills we have. We have all been created with a purpose, but whether or not we accept that destiny is entirely up to us. Once again, the answer to our question of purpose is not so nearly as difficult to discover as it is for Jason Bourne. We need merely turn to the Bible, and within it’s pages we will discover the answer for which people have spent lifetimes trying to find. But it’s not just as simple as cracking open the Bible, mind you. It takes some effort and some openness to see the correct context of what is there, and what it means to your life. If you don’t take the extra time and thought, it’s just a confusing addition to an already confusing world.

What Should I Do

The problem with searching for answers is once we find them, we then have to decide what to do with them. Does Jason Bourne really want to know who he is? Does he really want to remember who he used to be and why he knows all the things he knows? What will he do, how will it affect him should he discover the answers he’s been searching for in The Bourne Ultimatum. We’ll have to wait for the release of the movie to discover those answers, but for you and I, there doesn’t have to be any wait at all. Should we decide to come to Jesus Christ, should we decide to find the answers we’re looking for in the Bible, we can decide right now, today, what to do with them. Many have faced this choice. Some did not like what the Truth presented, and instead decided to ignore it or deny that they ever saw the answers it provided. Others have decided to flatly reject it, and instead created a completely false and deceptive group of answers that was more palatable. However, if we really want to know the answers to these questions, we must be brave enough to accept them. If we do that, we will finally be free of our past. Perhaps more than anything, that is the demon-like trouble which haunts Jason Bourne; one that keeps him prisoner. We all have similar demons, but we can be free if we truly want to be. The answers are there, ready for the taking. Do you have the courage to face and accept them?

The end of the character Jason Bourne’s quest has been all neatly scripted out, but the end to your quest is entirely in your hands. While The Bourne Ultimatum is sure to be an exciting and tense thrill ride in the opinion of some, it pales in comparison to the adventure of your own life and your own discovery of answers.
