K-LIFE radio plays Daily Planet's "Flying Blind" for one hour straight
|
While playing at the Mid-State Fair in San Luis Obispo on July 31, Daily Planet blazed new ground in the area of radio promotions. In front of 4,500 K-LIFE listeners, Daily Planet front-man, Jesse Butterworth challenged the station to "eek out a few more spins of the single, "Flying Blind," by playing it non-stop, "even if it plays between 3-4:AM."
K-LIFE music programmer Noonie Fugler stepped-up to the plate and accepted the challenge. K-LIFE played "Flying Blind" from 3-4:AM on Thursday, August 15, and incorporated a contest into the marathon by encouraging listeners to email in to morning show personalities with the number of times they heard the song play during the hour. Listeners guessing the correct number of times the single played where awarded with free CDs. "Flying Blind" played 22 times in a one-hour period.
"To be honest, I never had the privilege of being on the other side of a 'tracking call' in front of 4500 people! In Jesse's exuberance over the rising success of their debut single, I saw his joy in 'playing' with the appreciative audience and what he hoped would be a Music Director with a sense of humor. We accepted his challenge to play the song non-stop, sometimes you just gotta 'Fly Blind' with these sort of things," notes Fugler.
Daily Planet claimed the #1 position on R&R's Christian CHR chart with its debut single, "Flying Blind," the week of August 6.
