Ten Great Love Songs
02-13-2008
by Kevan Breitinger
In honor of Valentine’s Day, CMCentral looks at ten of the past year’s best love songs. What’s interesting about this list is that several artists have contributed more than one song. So I guess those are the real romantics among us!
Anyway, these are some of our favorites. Drop a line and let us know yours. In no particular order…..
1. “Grace” by Jason Gray, from All The Lovely Losers: A rootsy, melodic pop track, it’s accented warmly by horns
and bouncy beats.
2. “Fall” by Nicole C. Mullen, from Sharecropper’s Seed, Volume 1: Mullen’s clear vocals shine like refracted light through the organic instrumentation of “Fall,” soaring over the nimble violin, moving powerfully into free-flowing funk, and you’re left shaking your head in wonder.
3. “New Day” by the Robbie Seay Band, from Give Yourself Away: Piano ballad “New Day” is sung with gritty, tender vulnerability, its lyrics full of romantic, hopeful images.
4. “My Idea of Heaven” from Leigh Nash’s Blue on Blue: Her breathy and captivating vocals cover the notion of falling into a romantic love.
5. “Angel Tonight” again from Blue on Blue is more of the same, with a rich samba feel.
6. “Old Shoes” by Greg Adkins, from Chase the Western Sky: The wildly melodic “Old Shoes includes, appropriately, Adkins’ wife harmonizing behind him.
8. “Where I Land” again from JJ Heller: Another delicate sparkler.
9. “Give It Time” by Andy Gullahorn, from Reinventing the Wheel: This earthy love song is affectionately truthful, as he warmly covers his wife’s exasperating foibles that once grated on his nerves.
10. “Enough Time” another from Andy: His honest lyrics provoke us to consider what real love looks like, in real time.
