List of 10: Rockers
07-26-2007
by Kevan Breitinger
I admit, I’m reaching into the way back machine for this list of 10 Christian Rockers, all the way back to last summer in some instances, and even early spring in one instance. And let me state right up front that I already know there’s no hard rock or metal, among other omissions, and for no particular reason. It’s not the Top Ten10 Christian Rockers, as much as it is a friendly list of 10 Christian Rockers that lift my spirits and give me a case of happy feet. I’m just saying…. Drop me a line with your own accusations, er, um… suggestions, or post in the forum. Happy feet can be a very subjective thing, and I’d love to know yours. So here you have ‘em, in no particular order:
1. “Anything’s Possible” from Jonny Lang’s Turn Around (9/06): OK, I may be crazy, but I’m not stupid. Or not enough to omit Jonny Lang from a list of rockers anyhow. Lang works his funk guitar hard through this encouraging track, weaving in a Martin Luther King dream in the process.
2. “Higher Ground” from Ashley Cleveland’s Before the Daylight’s Shot (10/06): Cleveland brings a lot of blues power to this Stevie Wonder neck-bobber.
3. “Holy Ghost” by Paul Colman, from the Wes King Life Is Precious compilation (3/06): I know, I know, it’s pretty old now. But this slammin’ track popped out on an album of standouts, with its brawny guitar and howling take-no-prisoners vocals.
4. “Santa Barbara” from Andrew Osenga’s The Morning (06): Loved his Springsteen-like urgency on this up-tempo rocker, not to mention that simmering Hammond B3 beneath.
5. “Live Like Jesus Did” from Ceili Rain’s Whatever Makes You Dance (11/06): Nobody does kick-up-your-heels like Ceili Rain, and this R&B-flavored rocker overflows with their signature exuberance.
6. “Wherever We Go” from Newsboys Go (10/06): I know, it’s pop rock, I’m stretching here. But I like its upbeat buoyant party vibe. 7. “American Dream” from Switchfoot’s Oh! Gravity (12/06): Making amends for the Newsboys, maybe, but you gotta like the sharp bite lying within those catchy rock hooks: “I want out of this machine/It doesn’t feel like freedom,” adding, “This ain’t my American dream.”
8. “I Need You” from Relient K’s Five Score and Seven years Ago (3/07): Moves from opening discordant guitar riffs into hammering rock beats while openly proclaiming complete dependency.
9. “Hold On Love” from Sarah Kelly’s Where The Past meets Today (8/06): This track is absolutely sublime, its arrangements flawless. Dig the inclusion of the Valley Bible Fellowship Choir under her raw Joplin-like power vocals.
10. “Can’t No Grave Hold My Body,” from Mike Farris’ debut Salvation in Lights (7/07): Finally something current, ok? Love the way that thick 12-string adds texture to this gutsy howler.
