Jason Anderson: Fasting
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.” Luke 4: 1,2
Are you hungry right now? I won’t lie, I like food. Here Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert where for 40 days he did not eat, and at the end of them He was hungry. I’m thinking he was really hungry. I’m guessing I’d be starving if I didn’t eat for 4 hours,
But Jesus fasted 40 days without food. Fasting is when you don’t eat on purpose. You can fast for 1 meal or 1 day, but it is something the Bible tells us is great to go with prayer. Why? Well, it tells your body who is in charge. You are sending a message to your self that, yeah, I know you’re hungry, but you’re not the boss. God is, and right now we are praying for something so you’re just going to have to keep being hungry. Your body has a lot of desires, some of which can yell pretty loud. But who is in charge? Jesus did his big fast at the beginning of His ministry. If you want to start something great, or need something super big super fast, try a fast. It’s funny to think, but skipping a few meals can have a huge impact on your faith in God and what He has done for you.
Lord, I want my life to be under Your control. Spirit, help me to gain discipline, to put my flesh under Your charge through prayer and fasting. Only You could do this in me.
