And This Is Eternal Life
“And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” – John 17:3 (ESV)
Most of us read this verse and interpret the word “know” as, the observations or information we are aware of about God. When, as I have recently come to understand, the word “know” in John 17 is translated to have the same meaning as the word “knew” in Matthew 1:25. When speaking of Joseph Matthew says, “but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.” What I am getting at here is, when John writes of knowing God, he is not speaking of inquiry and intellect but rather intimacy with God. Now, many of us find false assurances (by “false assurances,” I mean, that which is not eternally assuring) in the amount of verses we have memorized or how many big words we use in reference to God and His character. John makes it clear here, that an awareness of God is not what it means to be saved. On the contrary, salvation is an intimate bond with God, made possible through Christ. So, I leave you with something to ponder, do you know about God or do you know God (2 Corinthians 13:5)? The answer to that question is key in a correct understanding of what it means to be saved. How sweet it is, to know that we can have an intimate bond with the God who created the universe and oh, how precious is the blood of Christ, which has made it possible for us to rejoice in that grace. Prayer for the Week: O Lord God, I pray that You by Your Spirit would keep me on the right side of this line; I want to know You, Lord, deep in my heart and in my spirit, to the degree that I would never get over the Love You showed me on Calvary. Cause my love for You to only grow deeper every day, I pray.
