Flight 180
Biography
Flight 180
Flight 180's BEC debut, Crackerjack, immediately established this Orange County ska-punk band as a major new force in music. Known simply as 180 originally, Flight 180 built upon Crackerjack's radio attention and critical praise by non-stop touring which included playing every major CBA music festival (Cornerstone, Creation, Tomfest, et al). To celebrate the bands recently lengthened moniker, Flight 180 is releasing their breakthrough follow-up album, titled Lineup. The band's sound on Lineup features a very specific new direction that will be exclusive to this Flight 180 album. With Crackerjack, Flight 180 included some swing songs which created quite a buzz. For Lineup, Flight 180 wanted to explore their classic big band influences further by making an entire album of swing music, featuring four originals and six covers. While the band's third album plans to return more to their roots, Lineup proves that Flight 180 has the chops and style to make quality swing music as well as anyone in the modern swing revival. Lineup furthers the band's "swing" fascination with the baseball-themed album artwork which features the band dressed in the same vintage forties baseball uniforms as worn in the feature film "A League of Their Own." In addition to the band's excellent originals, Flight 180 chose some of the best vintage big band songs as covers. These songs include a few numbers by Louis Prima, such as "Banana Split for My Baby," "Sing Sing Sing," and "I Want to Be Like U," which was also the theme to the classic Disney film "The Jungle Book." For "I Want to Be Like U," the band actually made all the background animal noises - lions, birds, bears, monkeys, etc. - entirely from their own mouths in what must have been a very frightening recording session. Other covers include the Stray Catsā "Look at that Cadillac" and Nat King Cole's "This Can't Be Love." Likewise, as a very tongue-in cheek move, Flight 180 covered the W's "The Devil is Bad," which was the first big swing single in the CBA market. "Our W's cover is totally different than the original," says Chris Tennberg. "We think people will get a kick out of it." To capture an authentic swing sound, Flight 180 brought in some talented swing session players, including a horn player from Royal Crown Revue. Contributions to the album include upright bass, piano, and a number of different horn players. Respected producer Gene Eugene utilized his vintage musical influences and recent experience working on the Swing Praise album to help Flight 180 capture the exact swing sound they were seeking. Coinciding with the release of Lineup, Flight 180 is participating in one of the biggest CBA tours of the year - The Chase the Sun Tour. Begun October 1st, the national Chase the Sun tour features Flight 180, All-Star United, Plankeye, and the massive OC Supertones on their first official tour for their smash new album. Following the tour, Flight 180 will continue out on the road on their own with the same non-stop road schedule which has made them spectacular live performers and won them fans all across the country. Flight 180 are quickly on their way to becoming one of BEC's biggest breakout bands, and Lineup is just the album to take them there. |
